Eight of Lynsted's quiz squad set out for the coastal settlement of Whitstable to compete in the RNLI Wine and Wisdom on the evening of 6th October 2007.  Led by (nearly late again) Judi, the team of Bernard, Alison, Jim, Brian, Maureen, Tom and David were just pipped to the post by "Surgical  Spirits" who amassed 104 points, out of a maximum 140, to our 98.  The boat crew themselves "won" the booby prize - a basket of lemons!   There were 13 teams in total comprising 104 guests.

Diane of the RNLI was proud to announce that the evening had raised over £400 for their funds.  We will be asking her to provide an update on their progress and good works for our Charities Update on our website in the future.  Apart from regularly attending RNLI quiz nights, we have donated funds from our own events in the past.

The evening was organised superbly as always by Wakefield Boy, Geoff Cowling, who typically set very challenging questions.  The mixture of youth (!) and experience in our team met that challenge 70% (98/140).

If I am permitted one moan -in the science round, we were asked the question "Where does turpentine come from?".  Armed with some papermaking experience of wood pulping, I answered, with confidence, "Pine trees".  To my horror the answer given by Geoff was "Palm Trees".  Of course, the Quizmaster is always right (and who wants to argue with Geoff anyway) but I had to clarify with him that his Wakefield accent hadn't distorted Pine into Palm.  Accepting his rules, I have to advise that in my travels through Scandinavia, one of the world's leading turpentine producing regions, I have never been hit on the head by coconuts!
